Mostly, you may hear frequent complaints of overheating problems, noisy engines, water pump leaks, clutch problems, and shift linkage problems with this UTV.

So, is this UTV really worth it? Can you easily fix these problems with the Arctic Cat Prowler 1000? Let’s figure out the answers to these questions together!

Arctic Cat Prowler 1000 Problems

Common Problems of Arctic Cat Prowler 1000

Now let’s warm you up for what you’re about to read. The Arctic Prowler 1000 is quite problematic. It usually spends more time in the dealership than at work.

The issues with the transmission, brakes, steering etc are quite common in this UTV. Also, mechanical failures and safety concerns are the fruit of manufacturing defects.

Also, despite being spacious, it is uncomfortable for tall and bulky riders. So, if you are a tall guy then you shouldn’t consider this UTV.

Moreover, the Arctic Cat Prowler 1000 is not the most fuel-efficient or environmentally friendly vehicle. Its large engine comes with a relatively smaller gas tank.

Don’t worry, we have added some easy fixes to these problems.

Let’s read and try to fix your UTV!

1. Overheating Problems

Overheating is a common problem with the Arctic Cat Prowler 1000. Especially if you will operate this UTV in hot weather or when towing heavy loads.

It is mentionable that most reported models with this problem come from the 2009 production year.

The cause of overheating is a malfunctioning fan, low coolant levels, a leaked water pump or a clogged radiator.

So, you should check the coolant level and the radiator for any leaks or damages. Also, ensure that the cooling system of your UTV is free of debris and clean.

Fix:

If you find that the coolant level is low, refill it with the coolant to the recommended level. If the radiator is damaged, you will need to replace it.

If the cooling system is clogged, you should flush it out with a radiator flush.

Also, if the fan is not working, then check the fan motor and the fan relay. If it is damaged, then you will need to replace it with an aftermarket fan.

2. Noisy Engine

The drivetrain noise on Arctic Cat Prowler 1000 UTVs engines is ungodly. This problem is more common in the 2009 models.

Many had put dual brakes on the rear wheels which should solve that single-disk drive line brake noise. But in reality, it doesn’t.

Actually, when the drive belt is worn-out or damaged, it produces a whining or grinding noise in your UTV. Another possible cause of a noisy drivetrain is loose or misaligned drive components, such as the drive shaft, U-joints, or axles.

So, you should inspect the bearings or bushings for any signs of damage, such as pitting, scoring, or looseness.

Also, you should check the fluid condition for turbidity or contamination

Fix:

You can line the engine cover with dynamic to cut down some of the noise. Also, you will need to replace the piston rings with new components.

Tightening or replacing them can also help you to eliminate the noise.

Also, you should check the cooling system for any issues and replace any faulty components.

3. Water Pump Leaks

Some users of this UTV also reported that their water pump leaks. A leak in the water pump can cause overheating issues, loss of coolant, and engine damage.

If you see coolant on the ground, it could be due to a leak in the water pump.

Apart from coolant level and coolant leaks, you should also visually inspect the water pump. If the water pump shaft is loose or wobbly, it could be a sign of a failing water pump.

Sometimes, a faulty gasket is cause of a water pump leak.

Fix:

First, you should inspect the gasket if it has any problem, then replace it.

However, if this doesn’t solve the issue, then I would recommend you replace the water pump itself.

4. Clutch Problems

The RPM of the Arctic Cat Prowler 1000, sometimes go up but the speed won’t. You may also be unable to go in reverse.

Oil leaks into the clutch housing and fixed plate failure can cause this problem. An oil leak in the clutch housing is very common in the Prowlers UTVs!

You should check for the smell of burning oil, rubber, or unusual smoke out of the clutch air-out duct. Also, look for a bad seal.

The fixed plate is splined and held in place with a nut. This nut can back off and allow the plate splines to be damaged.

Fix:

To fix clutch problems, you should replace the o-ring seal if broken. Also, remove the oneway bearing if you are using this UTV for high loads.

Arctic Cat now has a new nut that is by far better than the old design. This nut requires 160 ft. lbs. of torque to install

Finally, buy a new OEM wet clutch and drum.

5. Shift Linkage Problems

The Shif linkage problem is also common in Arctic Cat Prowler 1000 UTV. This problem causes difficulty in shifting, gear slippage, or even prevents the Prowler 1000 from shifting.

You will face this problem due to loose or disconnected linkage which happens over time.

You should visually inspect the linkage and its connection points. Look for any signs of wear, damage, or misalignment.

Also, perform a test drive to assess the shifting performance.

Fix:

I would suggest you replace the shift linkage with a stronger, more durable aftermarket one. Or adjust the shift linkage to ensure proper alignment and tension.

Which Year Arctic Cat Prowler 1000 Model Has the Most Problems?

There appear to be a few Arctic Cat Prowler 1000 model years with more problems than others.

For example, electrical problems, transmission issues, and steering and suspension issues with the 2012 and 2013 model years.

These models were not fuel efficient. Additionally, they had transmission problems, starter problems, and electrical issues. Specifically, the 2012 production year was particularly bad.

Other model years with reported Arctic Cat Prowler 1000 problems include the 2009 and 2010 models.

These models have overheating and excessive oil consumption issues. They also had transmission gear recalls.

2009 was a particularly bad year and all problems seemed to be pouring with the model pieces from that year!

Tips for Buying a Used Arctic Cat Prowler 1000

The Prowler 1000s have a bad reputation for the tranny problem. And people often have to replace the motors. Make sure to research the model year and vehicle history.

Check out the top end of the motor, and see if there is any evidence of motor teardown.

You should also check shift, low gear, high gear, and reverse operation.

Does it look like it had a bad life? How are the tires? Check them out before buying a new one.
